Cut String Staircases
As opposed to the plain stringer staircase, here the spindles rest on top of the treads, as can be seen on the photograph bellow. Because of the "excess" of timber which is removed, the overall appearance is that of a lighter, finer, more aerial staircase. Because of it's refinement and elegance, it is the staircase of choice in virtually any stately home...it is the quintessential British staircase which probably explains why in France, it is known as the "English staircase".
